1 stars (had to return it ...) - I wish I could give it the glowing reviews that I see from everyone else.

The picture is indeed truly awesome. However, there is a video-audio sync issue that is simply unacceptable. I saw other reviews about simply turning off then turning on the player to correct this. It doesn't work. For me, once the sync is off, it's off, whether I stop-start, change languages, pause, whatever.

To their credit, Oppo was very nice about everything. I've returned the player and expect that they will be good about providing me a refund. I *really* wish that it could have worked -- it did everything I wanted: awesome picture, dezonable (I own many zone 2's) -- it's great in every other respect. But I'd take an inferior picture as long as the video and audio were always in perfect synchrony. -Eric Wyse
5 stars (Not Just another DVD...) - I bought the OPPO initially because of its clean and sexy looking exterior. But after getting a chance to play around with it some more, I saw that it really had the ability to back up the claims on the box!!!



I am very sensitive to sound - direction intensity... the 5-1 converter built in really blew my mind... I have a Denon AVR 1900 - and I couldn't tell the difference between the two!!



The upconversion on the unit works flawlessly - there are no glitches, no drops nothing!



I was also impressed with the number of accessories that came in the box - these days you're lucky if they pop in batteries for the remote!!!



If you need a clean DVD player/upconverter that works and looks nice, this is it!

5 stars (OPPO blows away competition ) - OPPO 971H is the first DVD player that has satisfied my thirst for HD performance from a DVD player. I spent a lot (thousands) on my HD 65" RPT and my previous DVD player that claimed to have upconversion wasn't cutting. So, I researched DVD players that would get the most of out my bigscreen. I took a chance on OPPO and I love it! My bigscreen handles the 971H's output beautifully.

The OPPO player pumped true color and sound while handling the constant pause and go throughout the DVD. OPPO also includes a DVI cable with its DVD player, something that is unheard of nowadays. The simple look and silver color allows for a nice match to most entertainment systems, something that I am extremely picky about. Another feature of the OPPO player was its ability to play just about any type of CD, from Kodak Picture to SVCD. The 5.1 sound was also impressive since each channel was clearly separated in order to "suck you into the movie" even more.

Compared to my old DVD player this is what I found useful:



*the sound was much better



*the image was cleaner and more colorful



*it was great price...$200 is a bargain



*easy to use



*easy to set up to home system



*smaller and looked "cleaner"



*DVI and HDMI compatible



*the overall performance of the player



OPPO has satisfied my need for HD content through its OPPO 971H player! Although some DVD players claim HD output, OPPO is the first in my experience that has shown me a player that comes through in the clutch.
